The Presbyterian Mission Agency is hosting a dialogue next week on the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. The meeting is in response to a request from the 222nd General Assembly (2016) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) that “the Presbyterian Mission Agency facilitate dialogue events, which would include the authors of the 2005 civil society call and interfaith partners who are opposed to the BDS movement and any interested Presbyterians.”

The Way Forward Commission of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) began a three-day meeting today with the goal of formalizing its report to the 223rd General Assembly (2018) meeting in St. Louis this summer.

Today’s worship service at the chapel at the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) offices was not your typical service. Following the call to worship, participants joined in a rousing prayer for justice that included excerpts from the Confession of Belhar in a rhythm from Ghana, West Africa. The prayer was led by Alonzo Johnson, director of Self Development of People, and his African drum.

Flor N. Vélez Díaz, presbiteriana de toda la vida procedente de Mayagüez, ha sido nombrada gerente del proceso judicial en la Oficina de la Asamblea General (OGA). Ella comienza su nueva labor el 29 de enero.

Vélez Díaz tiene un bachiller en microbiología industrial (2003) y una licenciatura en derecho de la Universidad Interamericana en Hato Rey, Puerto Rico (2006). Ella, desde su admision en el Colegio de Abogados en el 2006, trabajó tanto en la práctica privada, como en el Senado de Puerto Rico y en el Departamento de Justicia.

Flor N. Vélez-Díaz, a lifelong Presbyterian and Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, native, has been appointed manager of judicial process in the Office of the General Assembly (OGA). She begins her new work January 29.

Vélez-Díaz holds a B.S. in Industrial Microbiology (2003) and a law degree from InterAmerican University in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico (2006). She has, since being admitted to the bar in 2006, worked in private practice as well as for the Puerto Rico Senate and Department of Justice.

Residents of Montecito, Ventura and Santa Barbara are still reeling from the recent mudslides that have left residents dead, injured and homeless. Sticky sludge and mud can be seen up to the rooftops in homes along the pathway of destruction in Santa Barbara. Witnesses say the rocks, trees, boulders and houses came plowing through the communities in a matter of seconds.

The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) has awarded a prestigious Digitizing Hidden Collections grant to an interdenominational consortium of institutions holding historic records of Philadelphia congregations.

The Presbyterian Historical Society (PHS), the national archives of the PC(USA), is one of the consortium’s 11 collecting groups. The project was one of 14 recommended for funding in 2017 out of 118 applicants.

In the coming weeks, government leaders from several countries around the world will begin receiving mail from Presbyterian churches containing prints or paper cut-outs of red hands. It’s part of the Red Hand Campaign, an initiative to encourage countries to stop the practice of turning children into armed soldiers.
