Easter Sunday Worship - Sermon: “When Is the End Not the End?” Rev. Dr. Ann M. Philbrick

He Will Rise! Sunday, April 1, 2018

EASTER SUNDAY

9:30 Adult Sunday School - session room

10:15 prepping and hiding Easter eggs - outside

10:30 Children’s Easter egg hunt - outside, side yard

11:00 Easter morning worship with communion - sanctuary

The season of Easter extends from Easter Sunday until Pentecost, May 20. Throughout the Easter season, we will be using prayers of praise in worship instead of prayers of confession. The Christian church has historically celebrated the Easter season as a time in which we emphasize adoration rather than confession. Of course, our need to confess our sin and shortcomings before God continues throughout the year. You are encouraged to continue your personal discipline of confession and to rejoice in the forgiveness and fullness of life given to us all in Jesus Christ.

Pastor Kim Rodrigue recently had throat surgery to address her voice issues. We are working to creatively address the needs of the church during this time. Keep pastor Kim in your prayers for a speedy and healthy recovery.

This Wednesday, April 4, is the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis. To honor his legacy and recommit ourselves to working for justice for all, we will gather in the sanctuary at 6pm. We will join with churches across the nation in tolling our church bells 39 times at 6:05, then share in prayer and conversation in the spirit of Dr. King's work. A group will head out to dinner together afterwards at a local restaurant.

STEWARDSHIP LUNCHEON SUNDAY, APRIL 8!  All members and friends of First Church are invited to a catered lunch on Sunday, April 8, following the morning service, to enjoy fellowship and talk about stewardship of the church for the coming year. This will be a chance to learn about our ministry, the financial needs of this congregation, and to have your questions answered about how your support for the ministry of First Church is multiplied within the community and throughout the world. As Christ’s body we are called upon to renew our commitment of talents and resources to building up His Church and the community around us. Throughout our 200 year history, members and friends have stepped forward in faith to ensure that we continue to grow and prosper in our mission of spreading God’s love in word and deed. We hope that you will participate in this journey by joining us for lunch on April 8 and then prayerfully considering what you will be able to offer in thanks for the many blessings we enjoy. Then, on Sunday April 15, we will respond during the morning service by dedicating a portion of our talents and resources to God’s glory over the coming year. The luncheon on April 8 is free, and you don’t need to bring anything but an appetite, and an open heart and mind to learn and thoughtfully consider our future!

Dinner is a simple fish meal that is being catered, so we need to know how many people plan to participate.  Donations to cover the cost of the meal will be taken, with a suggested cost of $10/person.  Your presence is more important to us than cost, so please sign up and come, and donate as you are able. Sign ups are due by the end of the day on March 25.

Each flower donation is $15.    Thank you for sharing in this symbol of new life.

Worship - March 11, 2018 -Sermon :“Life Upon Life Upon Life” Delivered by Dee Boling; Written by Rev. Kim Rodrigue

This Sunday, March 11th, after our morning church service, a group from FPCNO will be attending the matinee showing of “Black Panther” at the Broad Street Theater, located at 636 N. Broad St.

The movie starts at 1:20 pm, so we will leave the church at 12:50 pm, and carpool together to the theater. The cost of admission to the theater is $8.00 per person. The movie is rated PG-13.

After the movie, we will reconvene back at the church for an informal discussion, with particular focus on the various issues of social justice that the film raises – both onscreen and off screen. We envision this event as supplementing and advancing FPCNO’s ongoing church-wide discussion of racism and racial justice.

Free refreshments will be served at the post-movie discussion. All who are interested are welcome to join us.

PASTOR KIM AROUND TOWN

As fun as the Christmas and Mardi Gras seasons were, it is good to be back to ordinary time. This week I resume my set hours at a place outside the church building. Sometimes people are more comfortable talking with a pastor outside of the walls of a church. It may be a time for you to drop by or to bring a friend to visit. You don't have to have a particular need to stop by, but it is fine if you do.  It’s a time for conversation on anything from personal matters to church concerns to world peace – or anything else.

Pastor Kim’s walk, coffee & beer hours:

  • Monday, February 19th , 5:30pm                       meet behind the church on S. Prieur St.
  • Wednesday, February 21th, 5-7pm           Oak (8118 Oak Street)

I will be at the church on Wednesday afternoons from 2-4 for anyone who wants to drop by. I'm glad to meet with you at another time, either at the church or somewhere else. Just call 504-866-7409 or email me at kim@fpcno.org to set up a time.
