Worship Service, February 2, 2014, Sermon: “Leading from Your Blind Side” Rev. Fred J. Powell, III

We welcome Richard Tatum!! - Today we receive Rich Tatum into membership by transfer of church letter. Rich, a native New Orleanian who was exiled to upstate New York for a while, has now returned home to enjoy his retirement from the Computer industry. He is married to Kathy Crighton, who is a daughter of this church and is an ordained Presbyterian Minister.

Annual Congregational Meeting - Please plan to stay after worship on Sunday, February 16th to elect officers and to receive the annual report of the Congregation. Your Nominating Committee proposes the following slate of officers:

Thursday, January 9 was the awards ceremony at Rock-N-Bowl for the Super Service Challenge and winners from all regions were announced. Every submission received $100 and we were chosen for one of the $1,000 awards in the South Region! Go Team Pumpkin!

Worship Service, January 5, 2014, Epiphany/Communion Sunday - Sermon: “Like a Child” Rev. Douglas Cornelius

We welcome a Guest Preacher this Sunday!  

Rev. Doug Cornelius, who is preaching for us today, is leading a group of college students on a Mission Trip to New Orleans this week and we are glad to have them with us this morning. Doug is the Minister of Education & Youth at the First Presbyterian Church of Hamilton Square, in Hamilton, NJ.  He has served in that congregation for over eight years, working with youth, young adults, Sunday school, mission, contemporary music, creative worship, preaching, and anything else they might ask of him.  He graduated from Princeton Seminary in 2005, and is in his first call as an ordained minister.  He loves family, friends, music, sports, and hanging out with his two dogs.  He is passionate about working with youth and finding new ways to bring the Gospel to his own church community and the larger world.  He is one of the pastors at Hannah Mills' home church.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion -Tuesday, Dec. 24 at 6pm. A traditional celebration around the communion table of Christ's birth in music and scripture.

Saint's Day Party and Gumbo Luncheon - Sunday, December 29 after 11 am worship. Pastor Fred invite everyone to cheer on the Saints over homemade gumbo, bread, salad and probably homemade eggnog (BYOB too!).

Epiphany Celebration - Sunday, January 5 at 11 am worship. We celebrate the last day of Christmas, as well as the New Year with new stars AND new starts!

PROGRAM OF HOPE NEEDS YOUR HELP! The Program of Hope is inviting you to volunteer on Wednesday mornings at 9am! We are seeking volunteers with a heart for those who are homeless to distribute the men's and women's clothing and toiletries. Stop by for one week or make a regular commitment. Regardless, we would love to have you! We are also inviting you to donate this holiday season! Coats, blankets, sweaters, travel size toiletries, nail clippers, washcloths, foot powder, women's underwear and bras, reading glasses, socks, undershirts, and pajamas are all welcome donations.

  • Men’s Night – Monday, December 16, 6:30pm. Building of the Manger, bring power tools as well as your beer cozies!
  • Children's (and Adults!) Living Nativity in the Yard -Friday, Dec. 20 at 4.30 till 5.45. Bring costumes if you have them, otherwise, come as you are. We've got a stock!
  • Service of Quiet Light (Longest Night Service) - Saturday, Dec. 21 at 6pm. This is a service of healing and music especially for those who find Christmas complicated and difficult yet long for hope and peace.
  • Square Dancing - will return on January 13, 2014.

FAMILIES, YOU'RE INVITED TO THE ADVENT YOUTH LOCK-IN!  The children of FPC are invited to a lock-in at the church on Friday, December 6th! Kids are invited to eat, play games, watch a movie, make s'mores and go on a scavenger hunt to celebrate Advent together. The festivities will begin at 5:30, and families have the option of making a donation for participating. Pick-up will be at 8:30am Saturday morning. What We Talk About When We Talk About God Hannah Mills, our Young Adult Volunteer, will be having the last book study on Thursday, December 5 at 7pm at The Neutral Ground Coffeehouse . Rob Bell's "What We Talk About When We Talk About God". The questions that we will be discussing include "What does God look like to you - gracious or judgmental? loving or violent? - and why does it matter how you see and experience God?". Rob Bell is one of the country's most progressive pastors and wrote the New York Times Bestseller Love Wins, where he unpacks and wrestles with his beliefs about heaven and hell. Come join us for this casual and thoughtful conversation!
