A.D.: THE BIBLE CONTINUES on NBC -  Sunday, June 7 at 6:00pm will be the third series and we will be gathering at the home of TBA, for film and fellowship, on five consecutive Sunday evenings in different homes to watch and discuss “A.D. The Bible Continues” The story of the Apostles after the resurrection of Christ. The immediate aftermath of Christ's death and resurrection had a massive impact on his disciples, his mother, Mary, and key political and religious leaders of the era, events that would completely alter the entire world in a few centuries. The story of the apostles continues to have a direct and parallel impact on us, in the way that we are the gathering of Christians in the world trying to find our way forward, in our lives, and in our church.

worship bulletin - Sunday, May 17, 2015 - Sermon “Decently and In Order”, Rev. Fred J. Powell, III

About the Bulletin Cover this Sunday: - “Ascension” by Salvador Dalí

This picture combines two of Dali’s abiding interests of the 1950s: his obsession with a mystic form of Catholicism and his fascination with nuclear physics. The painting is dated 1958 and belongs to a series of images of Christ that came to Dalí in a dream in 1950. Inspired by the nucleus of an atom, the artist imagined Christ’s ascent unifying heaven and earth. The sunflower-like corona of the atom overlaps the divine sphere of the Holy Spirit, symbolized by the dove with outstretched wings.Though Christ’s body is recumbent, his hands rise tensely on either side. As was Dalí’s custom, he has positioned the figure of Christ so as to obscure his features. These are mirrored, however, by the portrait of Gala—the artist’s wife and muse—that hovers above the composition. Salvador Dalí. The Ascension of Christ, 1958. Oil on canvas. Pérez Simón Collection at the San Diego Museum of Art.

Worship Bulletin - Sunday, March 29, 2015 - Palm Sunday - Sermon -“Mission Improbable”, Rev. Fred J. Powell, III

Be Careful, Jesus —a Poem to Ponder for Holy Week

Lord Jesus, If only you would come to our city like you did to Jerusalem. We’ve got some great hymns to sing to welcome you! Our guitars would be out to lead the singing; we’d wave our scarves and dance. You would get a real red-carpet welcome –five-star treatment. There would be a real religious revival. It would be wonderful. If only you would come here to our country to rescue us. But in case you do, just one little word of advice – stick to religion, but be careful. Don’t interfere with politics, or economics, or big business and all that, and be careful not to make unpopular changes in the way we worship. Save us from what might happen in the next life, yes, but leave us to go on our own way, the way we are used to in this life. If you get it wrong for our city, who knows? We just might have to do something about you, too. —anonymous, United Church of Christ website

worship bulletin - Sunday, March 22, 2015 - Sermon -“Something Old, Something New”, Rev. Fred J. Powell, III

About the Affirmation for Sunday, March 22 - The Confession of 1993, (Presbyterian Church of New Zealand). The Presbyterian Church was established in New Zealand in 1840. Since then it has moved from being a Church for white, Scottish settlers to an ethnically diverse Church that integrates orthodoxy with a utilization of the gifts of South Pacific culture and reverence for creation which is very much a part of “Aotearoa” (The native Maori name for New Zealand.) This affirmation of faith seeks not only to tie together the work of God-with-us, but to also identify the gifts that God gives us through faith.

Join us in blessing Aya and Rodolfo Alvarez! After worship service this Sunday - Aya Alvarez (née Aya Amagavin) has served this church faithfully for the past years providing beautiful music and a bright smile every Sunday she is here…Rodolfo has also faithfully supported this church! We are thrilled to bless THEM with music this morning , as we sing “The Grace of Life is Theirs” in their honor this morning, and hold a reception after worship in honor of their wedding which was a month or so ago here in New Orleans. You are also invited to contribute to the love offering we are taking up for them. Please give your cash and checks (made out to FPCNO) to Claire Trimble.

Worship Bulletin - Sunday, March 15, 2015 - Sermon -“Snake on a Stick", Rev. Fred J. Powell, III

We will Welcome The Saint Anna’s Youth Choir this Sunday, March 15, 2015 to sing for us durng worship service - St. Anna’s choir is drawn from the neighborhood around the church. The choir not only challenges it’s members musically and spiritually, but is involved in their lives scholastically, familially and socially as well.

Information about the Affirmation of Faith which will be used during worship - This morning we are using part of the Belhar Confession which has its roots in the struggle against apartheid in Southern Africa. This "outcry of faith" and "call for faithfulness and repentance" was first drafted in 1982 by the Dutch Reformed Mission Church (DRMC) under the leadership of Allan Boesak in Belhar, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. Belhar's relevance is not confined to Southern Africa. It addresses three key issues of concern to all churches: unity, not only of the church, but among all people; reconciliation within church and society; and God's justice. This Confession of Faith is being considered for inclusion in the Presbyterian Church USA’s “Book of Confessions”, part of our church constitution.

Join us next Sunday, March 22 in blessing Aya and Rudolfo Alvarez! - Aya Alvarez (née Aya Amagavin) has served this church faithfully for the past years providing beautiful music and a bright smile, every Sunday she is here…Rudolfo has also faithfully supported this church! We are thrilled to bless THEM with music next Sunday morning , as we sing “The Grace of Life is Theirs” in their honor, and hold a reception after worship in honor of their wedding which was a month or so ago here in New Orleans. You are also invited to contribute to the love offering we are taking up for them. Please give your cash and checks (made out to FPCNO) to Claire Trimble.
