LOS ANGELES

Leaders of Pacific Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and a year-old Southern California church movement called “Matthew 25/Mateo 25” have recently secured the release of a Guatemalan immigrant pastor who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last summer.

Pastor Noe Carias entered ICE headquarters, accompanied by his wife and children, in late-summer. Though he had been granted permission by ICE in prior years (called a “stay of removal”) to remain in the United States with permission, on this day he was carried off in handcuffs to the Adelanto Detention Center.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Presbyterian Historical Society (PHS). To celebrate, PHS is sharing seasonal images from Pearl, its online archives, over social media.

During the 12 Days of Christmas, from December 14 to December 25, PHS will post one digitized image per day. PHS made 4,500 collection items available in 2017 through Pearl, which researchers around the world can explore using desktop computers, smartphones, and tablets. PHS recently introduced 30 new subject-themed collections to Pearl, including “Christmas in the Archives.”

It’s been a week since wildfires broke out in southern California and the fires are still raging out of control. There are currently six separate wildfires burning. The Thomas fire, which started in Ventura County, is the worst of the six and is now the fifth-largest wildfire in California history, according to fire officials.

The Board of Pensions is investigating the fraudulent redirection of 11 pension payments. The Board reissued the December payments to the pensioners, and acted immediately to ensure that no other Benefits Plan members or pensioners were, or would be, affected. General Stated Clerk J. Herbert Nelson, II issued a statement today from Israel – where he is traveling with a delegation of Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) leaders, criticizing President Trump’s decision to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel to instruct the U.S. State Department to begin planning to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
