On a chilly Saturday morning in April, 30 people from six congregations in Hudson River Presbytery embarked on a Holy Week journey of education, advocacy and worship called Healing Sacred Sites: From Death to Resurrection.

Este pasado Domingo de Todos los Santos, veintiséis santos, que van desde unos meses hasta setenta y dos años de edad, se les robo sus vidas inesperada y violentamente cuando un pistolero abrió fuego en medio de la adoración en la Primera Iglesia Bautista de Sutherland Springs, Texas. La pequeña congregación ha perdido un número significativo de sus miembros, incluida la hija de catorce años del pastor y varias generaciones de una familia, que perdieron ocho miembros por causa de la violencia. 만인 성도의 주일, 태어난 지 얼마 안된 유아서부터 72세까지의 26명의 성도들은 텍사스 주 서덜랜드 스프링스의 제일 침례 교회에서 예배 중의 총성으로 예기치 않게 그리고 폭력적으로 목숨을 잃었습니다.  이 작은 규모의 교회는 목사의 14살짜리 딸을 비롯하여 폭력으로 여러 세대의 8명을 한꺼번에 잃은 한 가정을 포함하여 상당수의 교인을 잃었습니다. 서덜랜드 스프링스(Sutherland Springs)의 작고 평화로운 공동체는 몇 초 만에 주민인구의 4 퍼센트를 잃었으며 그 마을의 아무도 그 총잡이의 악의에 영향을 받지 않은 사람이 없습니다.

El Rev. Dr. Benjamín F. Gutiérrez, quien sirvió a la Iglesia Presbiteriana como compañero de misión, junto con su esposa, Ernestina “Tina”, en Ecuador; ejerciendo como secretario asociado para el diseño de la misión, como enlace con América Latina y el Caribe, y como coordinador de área para Sudamérica, falleció el 2 de noviembre en Texas a los 87 años.

This All Saints’ Sunday, twenty-six saints, ranging from a few months to seventy-two years of age, were unexpectedly and violently robbed of their lives when a gunman opened fire in the midst of worship at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The small congregation has lost a significant number of its members, including the pastor’s fourteen-year-old daughter and multiple generations of one family, who lost eight members to the violence. The small, peaceful community of Sutherland Springs, in a matter of seconds, lost 4 percent of its population, and no one in that town was untouched by the gunman’s malice.

In a sermon here November 1—All-Saints Day—Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), General Assembly Stated Clerk J. Herbert Nelson, II, pledged that the denomination would continue to press the United States government to formally apologize for a massacre of Korean civilians that claimed as many as 300 lives in the early days of the Korean War.

“I cannot apologize for the government of the United States,” Nelson told the Korean congregation in his sermon, titled When the Righteous Perish. “However, we who are here today from the United States can pledge to not let the silence of this massacre continue.”

The Rev. Dr. Benjamin F. Gutiérrez, who served the Presbyterian Church as a mission co-worker, along with his wife, Ernestina “Tina,” in Ecuador; as joint field secretary, associate for mission design, and liaison with Latin America and the Caribbean; and as area coordinator for South America, passed away November 2 in Texas at age 87.

Our hearts are broken once again with the news of another mass shooting in our nation.

 

Yesterday, twenty-six worshipers at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, were killed by a man armed with a semiautomatic rifle. Their ages ranged from 5 to 72 years old. We pray for these victims and their families, for their fellow parishioners, friends, and neighbors, and for all of our sisters and brothers in the Southern Baptist Convention, the denomination to which this congregation belonged.

Citing Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) General Assembly actions dating back at least to 2012, the denomination’s stated clerk, J. Herbert Nelson, II this week sent a letter to the U.S. Congress urging legislators to pass a “clean” DREAM (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) ACT “that offers hope for young migrants by providing a pathway to citizenship.”

Hundreds of individuals and families from around the Kansas City Metro woke up and instead of putting on their Sunday best, they dressed in work clothes, boots, and gloves; gathered rakes, scissors, knitting needles, and casserole dishes; and drove to church to worship in, well, a different way.

Marie 'Breezy' Lusted, a Presbyterian mission co-worker and long-term volunteer, served as a nurse and Bible translator in Ethiopia for 56 years. She passed away in North Carolina on October 29 at the age 85. Her sisters, Ruth and Anita, a niece, Cindy, and a close friend were at her bedside.
