First Sunday in Advent Treat

Dear Church,

We will have a special treat the weekend of December 2 and 3. Not only is it the First Sunday of Advent, but a group of people from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN are coming down to be with the church and share in our worship and have conversation together. The group coming includes their dean and student government president.

Struggling with addiction?

Dear Church,

The president gave a speech today about opioid pain relievers and the public health crisis connected to addiction and their overuse. I haven’t had a chance to read his speech, but knowing that it is being addressed has it on my heart and mind.

The focus of Sunday’s worship is prayer

Dear Church,

I’m really excited about worship this week! My dear friend Jeff Moles will be in town and has offered to share his musical gifts with the congregation.  I’ve worked with quite a number of music directors, organists, and pianists over the years, and can say without exception that no one did a better job than Jeff at helping the congregation to worship through music. We are blessed that he is sharing that gift with us on Sunday.

Donate to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

Dear Church,

Maybe you, like me, are a little overwhelmed by the amount of destruction in our country from hurricanes and fires this year. Maybe you, like me, remember how kind people across the country were to the people of New Orleans after Katrina. Maybe you can bring to mind the faces of people who traveled to New Orleans, stayed at First Presbyterian Church, and made a difference in this church and the community surrounding it.

Inaugural Edition

Dear Church,

This is the inaugural edition of a most-weeks enewsletter. One of my observations in my first three months at First is that we need more communication. Carrie Fisher does a great job keeping the FB page up-to-date and Cheryl Roberts is great at sending out announcements. Still, we need more – a way to share thoughts, articles, challenges that is different from the yahoo group. This will be a work in progress, so please give me feedback.

Presbyterian Fun Fact

There are about 75 million Reformed/Presbyterian Christians worldwide and about 2.5 million belong to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
