Worship Bulletin January 31, 2016 - Sermon "Claimed by God" Elder, Patricia Hew Lee Ellezey

We will welcome Patricia Ellezey to our pulpit Sunday, Jan. 31! - Elder Patricia Hew Lee Ellezey  comes to us from Chinese Presbyterian Church where she is an elder as well as a past moderator of our synod, the Synod of the Sun. Although trained as a zoologist, this New Orleans native has an advanced education degree as well as a degree from Austin Theological Seminary (PCUSA). When she is not teaching, or working in the business world, or preaching, she is enjoying her 3 children and 4 grandchildren, either here in Louisiana or ‘snowbird”ing it up in Connecticut! We welcome her back to First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans.

Alla and King Arthur Parades are Sunday, Jan. 31! - Peter Cho (Krewe of Alla) and Fred Powell (Krewe of King Arthur) invite you to come enjoy the fun along the uptown parade route after church today. The King Arthur Parade will roll at 1 pm (Fred will be on Float 28 “Olympus”, downstairs in 3rd place, on the neutral ground side) followed by the Krewe of Alla Parade at 2 pm (Peter will be on the “Jimmy Buffett” float on the neutral ground side).

Come join the Schutt family Sunday, Jan. 31 for parade watching at 3915 St. Charles Ave. neutral ground side b/t General Taylor & Constantinople.  Leslie (715-0255) or Mark (931-6321) Schutt.

Ash Wednesday Pancake Supper and Worship Service - Wednesday, February 10th, 6 pm  We will start with a pancake supper (there will be accommodations for people with sugar/gluten issues) and then have a short worship service afterwards.  This marks the beginning of the 40 days of preparation before Easter. “Yesterday’s palms are today’s ashes.”

National PCUSA meeting will be at FPCNO right after Mardi Gras - FPCNO is hosting the final meeting of the national PCUSA Mission Responsibility Through Investment (MRTI) committee meeting Thursday-Friday, February 11-12, 2016. This is a high visibility General Assembly committee that is charged with making recommendations to the 222nd General Assembly meeting in Portland this June about divestment of companies doing business in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. This General Assembly committee is where the big hot-button issues this June will be discussed: Will the PCUSA divest its stock holding in companies that are alleged to be committing war crimes in Gaza and the West Bank? There are many who feel that doing so will put the state of Israel in jeopardy, and many others who feel that not to do so is serious lapse in moral and ethical judgement. The meetings are open to the public and will be held Thursday from 11am to 7 pm and Friday from 11 am to 4 pm. This is not the first time that FPCNO has had a role in changing the course of Presbyterian and US history; FPCNO held the meeting to form the Southern Presbyterian Church here in 1861! Let us pray that we can help foster the cause of justice and mercy in 2016!
