worship bulletin - Sunday, May 17, 2015 - Sermon “Decently and In Order”, Rev. Fred J. Powell, III

About the Bulletin Cover this Sunday: - “Ascension” by Salvador Dalí

This picture combines two of Dali’s abiding interests of the 1950s: his obsession with a mystic form of Catholicism and his fascination with nuclear physics. The painting is dated 1958 and belongs to a series of images of Christ that came to Dalí in a dream in 1950. Inspired by the nucleus of an atom, the artist imagined Christ’s ascent unifying heaven and earth. The sunflower-like corona of the atom overlaps the divine sphere of the Holy Spirit, symbolized by the dove with outstretched wings.Though Christ’s body is recumbent, his hands rise tensely on either side. As was Dalí’s custom, he has positioned the figure of Christ so as to obscure his features. These are mirrored, however, by the portrait of Gala—the artist’s wife and muse—that hovers above the composition. Salvador Dalí. The Ascension of Christ, 1958. Oil on canvas. Pérez Simón Collection at the San Diego Museum of Art.

ECOrecycling-- an easy way to give to FPCNO! - The FUNdraising Committee of First Pres is starting a recycling fundraiser! There’s nothing to buy (isn't that awesome!). We are simply asking you to protect the environment by donating your used consumer electronics and unwanted, broken or mismatched jewelry. Your used item(s) may be tax deductible and will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations. 100% of the proceeds will help fund First Pres. We will be collecting the following items: Cell Phones, Ink Jet Printer Cartridges, Laptops and Netbooks, iPads and Tablets, iPods, Digital Cameras, Metals (Gold, Silver and Platinum--not costume jewelry). So start cleaning out those drawers and closets! Your recyclables might help First Pres!
