Wedding FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the process for securing a marriage license?

Couples can arrange for a marriage license at the State Registrar at1450 Poydras Street, Benson Tower, Suite 407 in downtown New Orleans. The website is https://ldh.la.gov/page/644.

The license must be obtained within 30 days of the wedding but more than 24 hours before the wedding ceremony. Please bring both copies of the license to the rehearsal! That way you won’t have to worry about it on your wedding day. The pastor, the couple, and two witnesses will sign the license, usually during or after the ceremony. You must fill out the license correctly or it will be voided!

How many people can the church accommodate?

First Presbyterian has two rows of 13 pews on the main floor and 3 rows of pews in the balcony. We can accommodate 200-250 guests. If needed, you may rent additional chairs to be added behind the last row of pews on the first floor, adding potentially 50 more guests.

Where will my guests park?

Parking is on-street in the surrounding neighborhood and is usually not a problem. If needed, the couple can request to use the church’s side lot (“The Pumpkin Patch”), but this is rarely needed.

Guests planning a destination wedding frequently use motorcoach service. We request that coaches park away from the front of the church, possibly in front of the side lot. Motorcoaches should not park at the rear of the church on South Prieur St.

Is the church handicap accessible?

Yes, but not at the front of the church. We have a handicap ramp at the back of the church built by Boy Scout Troop 185. If possible, please alert us ahead of time so we can facilitate getting your guests in the building through the rear entrance.

When can my florist arrive?

The florist should arrive one hour before the wedding is set to begin. If your florist needs to arrive earlier, please note that the church is not typically staffed on weekends and there will be an additional fee of $150 an hour for staff to be on site to open the church.

Do you permit unity candles?

Yes! In fact, we have two different styles of unity candle holders that you may borrow. (Candles should be provided by the couple.) We also permit sand ceremonies.

How long is the aisle?

The aisle is 14-ft long from the threshold of the narthex to the first pew. We have this video to give you an idea of how long it takes to walk down the aisle: https://youtu.be/d0J18KgY1f4

May we bring pictures of loved ones who cannot be at the ceremony?

Of course! Couples usually place them on the table by the entrance or on the communion table, which is generally placed off to the side during weddings.

What is a typical wedding service?

This page outlines a typical wedding service that may be found in the Common Book of Order.

Can we hold our rehearsal dinner or reception at First Presbyterian?

We do have a Fellowship Hall that is available to rent at a cost of $2,850, which includes a $300 refundable damage deposit and a $350 janitorial fee. Rental includes use of a commercial kitchen, use of 8 rectangular tables and up to 60 chairs. Rental does not include sound system, catering, any additional tables or chairs, serving ware, or tablecloths. Please contact the church office to inquire about availability at info@fpcno.org or 504-866-7409.

Anything else you recommend?

While not required, it’s always beneficial to have your musicians or a musician’s representative at the rehearsal. Your pastor should also, of course, be there.
