Welcome to First Presbyterian Church in New Orleans!
We are a church with a rich history. Feel free to browse our website and discover more about us. First Presbyterian is an open and affirming congregation that welcomes and encourages all to join us in worship. We are affiliated with the PC(USA).
We are a More Light Congregation and a member of the Covenant Network of Presbyterians. We welcome all people, all races, and all sexual orientations.
Early yesterday morning, one of the large oak trees along the Claiborne side of the church collapsed into the playground. We are happy to report that no one was in the area at the time and there were no reported injuries. The building was not touched by the tree collapse. (Praise the Lord!) The fence along Claiborne was only slightly damaged but was taken down further during the tree removal process.
We had a great GiveNola Day this year! We raised $655!!
GiveNOLA Day is a 24-hour event hosted by the Greater New Orleans Foundation to inspire people to give generously to nonprofit organizations that are making our region stronger, creating a thriving community for all. GiveNOLA Day raises money for the community, brings new donors to local nonprofits, and shows that anyone can be a philanthropist.
It has been almost a year that we have been without full time pastoral leadership. It has been a good year- we have seen many blessings including new members, new building tenants, a balanced budget. We have had incredible variety and energy on Sunday mornings, hearing from pulpit supply, our own Elders, and members. We remain a strong, resilient congregation.
After worship today we had a champagne toast to bid farewell to our one of our most active members,Claire Trimble. She has given so much of herself to New Orleans and to our congregation since she moved here in 2006.
As a group, we are reading America's Original Sin by Jim Wallis and we are off to a great start. There's still time to join a group- this week's discussion will focus on chapters 2 and 3.
We are seeing a high level of participation with insightful comments in the various small group discussions that are being led by members throughout the week. As a church, we're not afraid to confront the important, but sometimes volatile, issue of racism and racial justice head on.
The small groups will last for about 6 weeks and there are four groups you can join.
Please join us for a screening of '13th' this coming Sunday. It's being held at First Presbyterian Church, on the riverside corner of Jefferson Ave & Claiborne Ave. Invite your friends, churches, community centers, etc. to come as well.

When: Sunday, April 2nd from 4pm-7pm
Where: First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans, 5401 S. Claiborne Ave
The Reformed tradition understands Baptism and the Lord’s Supper to be Sacraments, instituted by God and commended by Christ. Sacraments are signs of the real presence and power of Christ in the Church, symbols of God’s action. Through the Sacraments, God seals believers in redemption, renews their identity as the people of God, and marks them for service.
Happy Kings Day! Today is Epiphany and we will celebrate during worship this Sunday at 11am by heralding the arrival of the 3 kings with Communion, Epiphany stars, bells, and music, followed by fellowship with coffee and king cake!
As it is also the last day of Christmas, we will be undecorating the sanctuary and placing our magnificent tree to the curb to boost coastal restoration efforts.
We'll ring in the New Year with a nontraditional service centered on singing many of the wonderful Christmas hymns that we've been waiting all Advent to get to!
We're back at our normal start time of 11:00am.
Hope to see you there!
